When SCA in Obbola outside Umeå made its biggest factory investment to date, Norrbottens Bergteknik was involved in drilling and blasting work for the new plant.
- We were responsible for drilling and blasting for all the water and sewage in the area, as well as the blasting where the building stands," says Lasse Melin, Norrbottens Bergteknik.
The investment consists of a brand new paper machine for the production of kraftliner. The new paper machine has been built in a brand new building that is in line with the building that houses the previous paper machine.
Costs 7.5 billion
SCA's new mill represents an investment value of SEK 7.5bn and is being built to meet an expected demand for renewable packaging. When the new machine in Obbola is fully operational, production will increase from the previous volume of 450,000 tonnes of kraftliner per year to 725,000 tonnes.
Accuracy and precision
The work began in January 2020 and was completed in the autumn. Norrbottens Bergteknik had four employees and two Sandvik Dino 400 rigs on site.
– It was an exciting project because it's such a large plant to be built. Our work was fairly traditional, but the challenge was that the existing pipelines to the factory were close to where we were blasting, and it was also a large construction site where many people work together at the same location. So we were extra careful with preparations and safety issues," explains Lasse.
